Getting a Built-In Out of Its Cabinet: Access, Weight and Clearance
A built-in is cabinetry, not an appliance you roll out. What a service pull really involves, what gets damaged when it is rushed, and how to prepare for one.

Most people meet this question at the worst possible moment: the appliance has failed, a technician is standing in the kitchen, and the sentence is “it has to come out.”
That sentence is not an upsell. Built-in refrigeration is not a product you roll forward; it is a component of the room, fitted into an opening that was sized for it, wearing panels cut to match the joinery. Getting it out and getting it back is a real part of the job, and understanding it makes the difference between a smooth repair and an expensive afternoon.
Whether it comes out at all depends on the platform
The single most useful fact about any built-in is where its compressor and condenser live.
On Classic-style and legacy built-in refrigeration, the machine compartment is at the top of the cabinet, behind a flip-up grille. A great deal of service — condenser cleaning, fan motors, and a good share of sealed-system access — happens from a step ladder with the appliance exactly where it is.
On Designer, Integrated and 700 Series units, the machine compartment is at the bottom. There is no meaningful access from the front, so the unit comes clear of the cabinet run for anything below the liner. Sub-Zero states outright that Designer series units cannot be standard-installed; they are a cabinetry job going in, and they are a cabinetry job coming out.
That is why the first thing we ask for is a photograph of the model and serial plate. It tells us whether your repair is a ladder or a pull, and that changes the time, the number of technicians and the preparation.
The weight is above the axle line
A full-size built-in runs well past 700 pounds loaded. A 48-inch unit is heavier again, and the load is not evenly distributed: glass shelving, door bins and the doors themselves put a lot of it high and forward.
Two consequences follow.
The first is that it gets emptied — everything, including the doors — before it moves. This is also the honest moment to make decisions about food rather than discovering an hour later that it has been standing on the counter.
The second is structural. A point load like that on framing that was never calculated for it will settle over years, and a settled cabinet is a door that no longer pulls in evenly at the corners. That is why, in an older house, a door that will not seal is often a levelling problem rather than a gasket problem, and why fitting a new gasket without correcting the level buys a few months at most.
Panels and doors come off first
Panel-ready and integrated units carry a joinery panel fixed to a frame and scribed to the room. It is not a cosmetic cover; it is a piece of the kitchen.
It comes off before the unit moves, it is set down flat, and its edges are protected. A chipped panel edge is the single most expensive thing that can go wrong on a service call, because the fix is a cabinetmaker rather than an appliance part, and matching an existing finish is rarely straightforward.
On tight installations the doors follow the panels — a column that will not clear a doorway with its doors on will clear it stripped, which is exactly how these units were brought into the house in the first place.
Floors, thresholds and the travel path
Stone, wide-plank hardwood and large-format tile all mark, and the marks are permanent.
Protection goes down over the full travel path, not just where the appliance ends up. The specific trap is the lip left where flooring was laid up to the unit rather than under it: a dolly dropping off that edge under 700 pounds is how a tile cracks, and it is entirely avoidable by bridging it.
The other thing worth doing before anybody arrives is clearing the path — rugs, stools, anything in a doorway, and ideally a decision about which door the appliance will travel through if it has to leave the room.
Services: water, power and gas
Behind the appliance are things that fail out of sight.
Water. Built-in refrigeration with ice or a dispenser has a plumbed supply. It is isolated at a shut-off first, and disconnected at the appliance rather than dragged. A supply valve nobody can reach without pulling the cabinet is a design fault worth correcting while the unit is out.
Power. Most of these appliances expect their own circuit, and the receptacle is usually behind the unit where nobody can see it. It gets unplugged rather than merely switched off at the breaker, and while the unit is out is the moment to look at the receptacle itself. An appliance that resets, or a control board that has failed twice, is often being fed badly rather than failing on its own account.
Gas. A professional range or a gas cooktop is isolated and disconnected by someone qualified to remake the connection, and it is leak-tested afterwards. This is not a place for improvisation.
What the empty cabinet tells you
The five minutes after a unit comes out are some of the most useful on the call.
You can finally see the ventilation situation — whether the enclosure has any path for exhaust air, or whether trim, a kickplate or a deep counter has quietly sealed it. You can see how much dust and pet hair the condenser has been breathing, which is usually far more than the owner expected. You can see whether the water line is kinked behind the cabinet, whether the receptacle is sound, and whether the floor under the unit is level.
Half the repeat failures we are called back to on somebody else’s repair are visible in that gap and were never looked at.
Putting it back is the part that matters
Reinstallation is not the reverse of removal, because now it has to be right.
The cabinet goes back level and square. The doors are rehung and aligned, the panels refitted, and the door checked for an even seal all the way round — the paper test along each edge takes a minute and it is the difference between a repair that holds and a callback in six weeks. Ventilation is restored properly rather than approximately, since the grille path is what keeps the sealed system alive. Water is reconnected and checked under pressure before anyone leaves.
And if the unit is refrigeration, it gets time. A built-in that has been out of the cabinet and off power needs hours, not minutes, to pull back down to setpoint, and judging it before then produces a phone call nobody needs.
How to prepare for one
Four things, and they genuinely shorten the visit.
- Send a photograph of the model and serial plate before the appointment. It decides whether this is a pull at all.
- Empty the appliance if you have been told it is coming out.
- Clear the path and tell us in advance about stone floors, a tight turn, a step, or a doorway that barely admitted the unit when it was installed.
- Say what changed — a remodel, a plumbing job, a storm, an outage. Half of what we find behind a cabinet was introduced by other work.

Establish what platform you actually have
Where the compressor and condenser sit decides everything about the pull. On Classic and legacy built-in refrigeration they are at the top of the cabinet behind a flip-up grille, which often means no pull at all. On Designer, Integrated and 700 Series units they are at the bottom, which usually means the unit comes clear of the run. The model and serial plate resolves it.

Empty it, including the doors
A loaded built-in runs well past 700 pounds and most of the weight the mover feels is above the axle line. Food, glass shelving and the contents of the door bins all come out first. On a freezer, this is also the moment to decide about the food rather than after the appliance is in the middle of the kitchen.
Anything held above 40°F for more than two hours is a food safety decision, not a repair decision.

Take the custom panels off, then the doors if needed
Panel-ready doors carry a joinery panel fixed to a frame, and that panel is scribed to the room. It comes off before the unit moves, and it gets set down flat and protected, because a chipped edge on a custom panel is the single most expensive thing that can go wrong on the call.

Protect the floor before anything rolls
Stone, wide-plank hardwood and large-format tile all mark. Protection goes down across the whole travel path, not just where the unit lands, and any lip where flooring was laid up to the appliance rather than under it gets bridged rather than bumped over.

Deal with the services
Isolate the water supply at a shut-off you can actually reach, and disconnect at the appliance rather than pulling on the line. Unplug it - do not rely on the breaker alone if the receptacle is behind the unit. On gas equipment the supply is isolated and the connection broken by someone qualified to remake it.
Never move an appliance with a live water line or a connected gas flex behind it. Both fail at the fitting, and both fail out of sight.

Walk it out under control, then check what you found
The unit comes out square, slowly, with two people. Once it is clear, the cabinet interior tells you a great deal: the state of the receptacle, whether the water line is kinked, how much dust the condenser has been breathing, and whether the enclosure has any ventilation path at all.

Put it back level, and prove the door before you leave
A built-in only seals if the cabinet is square and level. Reinstallation is levelled, the doors are rehung and aligned, the panels go back, and the door is checked for an even seal all round before anyone signs anything.
Questions this raises
Why does my refrigerator have to come out for what sounds like a small repair?
Because of where the component lives. On a Designer, Integrated or 700 Series unit the compressor, condenser and the sealed system are at the bottom of the cabinet, and there is no service access from the front. A fan motor or a board might be reachable in place; anything on the sealed system is not. On a Classic-style unit with everything behind the top grille, the same repair often needs no pull at all.
How much does a built-in actually weigh?
A full-size built-in refrigerator runs well past 700 pounds loaded, and a 48-inch unit is heavier again. That matters twice: once for the people moving it, and once for the floor, because a point load like that on framing that was never calculated for it will settle, and a settled cabinet is a door that will not seal.
Can one technician do this alone?
Sometimes, and often they should not. Undercounter units, drawer units and dishwashers are usually one-person jobs. Full-size columns and 48-inch units in a tight kitchen, on stone, or with custom panels are a two-person job, and any shop that pretends otherwise is transferring the risk to your flooring.
What is the most common damage on a service pull?
Flooring, at the lip where tile or engineered board was laid up to the appliance rather than under it. After that, the edge of a custom door panel, and the scribed trim beside the opening. All three are avoidable with protection and planning, and all three happen when someone tries to save fifteen minutes.
Why does my new built-in run warm in the cabinet?
Almost always ventilation. Built-in refrigeration exhausts through the grille at the front rather than out of the back, so the airflow path is the toe area and the top grille. A decorative kickplate, a deep counter overhang or trim added after installation can close it off. Sub-Zero warns specifically that a blocked kickplate on a 700 Series unit can lead to sealed-system failure - the appliance is fine, the cabinetry is what failed.
