# Sub-Zero Ice Maker Not Making Ice: The Checks That Actually Find It

## Work the checks in this order

Sub-Zero publishes a diagnostic sequence for an ice maker that has stopped, and the order is deliberate. Working it out of order is how people end up replacing an ice maker assembly that was never the problem.

The short version, in Sub-Zero's own order:

1. Allow 24 hours. The freezer must reach temperature first.
2. Verify the ice maker is switched on.
3. Confirm the freezer is at or below 5 degrees F, ideally 0 degrees F.
4. Clean the condenser if it has not been done in the last 6 to 12 months.
5. Verify the ice bin is properly installed and level.
6. Reseat the water filter.
7. Check whether an inline or whole-home filter has expired.
8. Verify the water supply valve is on.
9. Check for low water pressure. Small or hollow cubes point directly at this.
10. Confirm the shut-off arm is down, and the white plastic rudder arm is attached.
11. Clear any jammed ice.
12. Check whether the fill tube is frozen.

Most of that list is free and takes twenty minutes. Roughly the top half resolves the majority of no-ice calls that turn out not to need a technician at all.

## The freezer temperature threshold is the one people skip

Write this number down: **5 degrees F**.

That is the temperature at or below which a Sub-Zero ice maker will operate. Sub-Zero recommends 0 degrees F as the setpoint. Between those two numbers you have a small working margin, and above 5 degrees F ice production simply stops.

This is why the ice maker is frequently the *first* symptom of a completely different problem. A freezer that has drifted from 0 degrees F to 9 degrees F will still keep a leg of lamb rock solid. Nobody notices. What they notice is that the ice bin is empty. If your freezer measures warm, stop working on the ice maker and start working on the freezer: setpoints, door gasket, condenser, and airflow.

## The three ways an ice maker ends up inside a block of ice

The call that sounds alarming - "there is a solid block of ice around the ice maker" - is nearly always one of three faults. They are worth separating, because the repairs are completely different and the wrong one buys you a month.

**A fill valve that no longer seals.** The valve is a solenoid that opens for a timed interval to meter a fixed volume into the mold. Once the seat stops closing cleanly it weeps continuously, and a slow weep into a compartment held at 0 degrees F does not evaporate and does not drain. It freezes, and it keeps freezing until the assembly is encased. Replace the ice maker without replacing the valve and you will be looking at the same block of ice next month.

**A fill tube that has capped over.** The tube delivering water into the mold sits in a sub-freezing compartment and stays clear because water passes through it regularly, and on many designs because a small heater keeps it above freezing during the fill. Once flow drops to a dribble - a spent filter, a partly closed supply valve, a restricted valve seat - what is left in the tube freezes, the next fill meets a plug, and the water goes wherever it can instead.

**A drain that is not draining.** Where there is a drain in the ice compartment or below the evaporator, a frozen or blocked line puts meltwater where it should not be. The tell is ice that has formed in visible layers rather than as one solid mass, because each defrost cycle added another.

What is not the cause, despite being blamed constantly, is the ice maker assembly itself. Measure the compartment temperature, watch a fill, and establish where the water is actually coming from before anything is ordered. Filters and air purification cartridges are consumables and Sub-Zero's warranty excludes them, so nobody else is going to remind you to change them either.

## If the panel is showing something

If SERVICE is flashing, or you have an EC40 or EC50 on screen, that changes the conversation.

**EC40** is excessive freezer compressor run time. It applies to 600 Series, 648PRO, 700 Series and the IC-27 Integrated Column. Sub-Zero's triage rule is specific: if temperatures are less than 10 degrees above setpoint, clean the condenser; if they are more than 10 degrees above setpoint and the door was not left open, contact service. On 700 Series units, also verify custom cabinetry is not blocking the kickplate.

**EC50** appears with SERVICE flashing. It may be cleared by holding the door-ajar alarm key for 15 seconds, but only after a condenser cleaning and only once temperatures are already back near normal.

**EE on the 600 Series** has no consumer troubleshooting. Sub-Zero says that plainly. It needs service.

One rule cuts across all of them: **do not clear a code before the technician arrives.** Sub-Zero's own guidance on EC40 is that service will need to see the error code logged by the system. That log is often the difference between a one-visit diagnosis and a return trip.

## The fill tube, and why not to attack it

If everything upstream checks out and the mold is dry, look at the fill tube. Ice capping the tube means water stopped arriving and then froze what was left.

The temptation is to melt it with hot water or clear it with a screwdriver. Do neither. A hot water pour refreezes further along and can reach connections that should stay dry, and anything rigid pushed into that area can damage the mold or the tube itself.

The correct approach is a controlled defrost: empty the compartment, shut the unit off, prop the door open, and let it come to full room temperature and dry out. Then restart it and allow 24 hours before you judge it. If the fill tube freezes again, the underlying cause is still there - typically a fill tube heater, a valve leaking by, or genuinely low incoming water pressure - and it needs diagnosing.

## Undercounter ice makers are a different animal

If your no-ice problem is a UC-15I or the older 315I, most of the sequence above still applies but the machine is not the same. The UC-15I is 14 3/4 in W x 33 5/8 in H x 23 in D, runs on a dedicated 15 amp 115 VAC circuit, produces up to 50 lbs of ice per day and stores 25 lbs. The UC-15I has no drain pump; the UC-15IP does. Its filter is 7042803.

Undercounter ice makers also count as small appliances under EPA's definition - factory-charged, hermetically sealed, five pounds or less of refrigerant - which means sealed system work on one legally requires EPA Section 608 certification, the same as on a built-in refrigerator.

## When to call

Call if the freezer will not hold 5 degrees F or colder, if the fill tube keeps freezing after a proper defrost, if the ice maker area keeps forming a block of ice, if water is leaking anywhere near the ice maker, or if the panel is displaying a code.

## Procedure

1. **Give it 24 hours if anything changed recently** — New installation, a power outage, a breaker trip, or a unit that was emptied and switched off all need up to 24 hours. The freezer compartment has to reach temperature before the ice maker will start a harvest cycle. Judging an ice maker at hour four tells you nothing.
2. **Confirm the ice maker is actually switched on** — Check the ice maker on/off setting on the control panel or the switch on the ice maker itself, depending on series. It gets switched off during vacations, deep cleans, and by children who like buttons, and it is the single most common reason a working ice maker makes no ice.
3. **Measure the freezer temperature** — The ice maker requires the freezer at or below 5 degrees F, and Sub-Zero recommends 0 degrees F. Put a thermometer in the freezer for 15 minutes and read it. A freezer sitting at 10 degrees F will keep food frozen and still produce no ice at all, which is why people assume the ice maker is broken when the freezer is the problem.
4. **Check the shut-off arm and the rudder** — The metal shut-off arm must be DOWN. If it is up, or resting on a mound of ice, the ice maker believes the bin is full and stops. On models with a white plastic rudder arm, verify it is still attached - they get knocked off when the bin is pulled.
5. **Reseat the bin and the water filter** — Pull the ice bin out and push it back in until it is fully seated and level. Then twist the water filter out and back in firmly. A filter that is not fully seated restricts flow enough to starve the fill valve while looking perfectly installed.
6. **Check the water supply and any whole-home filter** — Confirm the shut-off valve feeding the refrigerator is fully open. If the house has an inline or whole-home filter, check when it was last changed. An expired whole-home filter upstream will quietly strangle the refrigerator's water supply long before anyone notices it at a faucet.
7. **Clean the condenser if it has been 6 to 12 months** — Sub-Zero puts condenser cleaning in the middle of its own ice maker diagnostic sequence for a reason. A restricted condenser raises freezer temperature just enough to stop harvest cycles. Classic and legacy Built-In units have it at the top behind a flip-up grille; Designer and legacy Integrated columns have it at the bottom behind the kickplate.
   Warning: Switch the unit off at the control panel or breaker before brushing near the condenser fan.
8. **Look for a jam and a frozen fill tube** — Clear any ice wedged in the mold or the ejector. Then look at the fill tube where water enters the mold. If it is capped with ice, the fill tube is frozen and refilling has stopped. That is a repair, not a cleaning - the underlying cause is usually a failed fill tube heater, a low water pressure dribble, or a valve leaking by.

## Questions people ask

**How cold does the freezer have to be before a Sub-Zero ice maker will run?**

At or below 5 degrees F, with 0 degrees F recommended. That is the factory setpoint and it is not a suggestion. Ice production is one of the first things to stop when a freezer drifts warm, so a freezer holding food perfectly well at 8 or 10 degrees F can still produce no ice at all.

**My cubes are small and hollow. What causes that?**

Sub-Zero identifies small or hollow cubes specifically as a low water pressure symptom. The mold is not filling completely before the harvest cycle runs. Check the supply valve, the refrigerator water filter, and any whole-home or inline filter first. If all of those are clear, the pressure problem is in the house plumbing and it is a plumber's call, not an appliance repair.

**Which water filter does my Sub-Zero take?**

The twist-in filters 4204490 and 9030868 cover Classic (BI, CL), Designer (IT, IC, DEC, DET), 648PRO, PRO3650 and PRO4850. Classic push-in filters include 7045454 (formerly 7023812), 7023812 and 7009931; 7005017 and 7023811 are discontinued. The UC-15I undercounter ice maker uses 7042803, which replaced the discontinued 7012333. Always confirm against your model and serial tag before ordering.

**Why would a new ice maker assembly not fix the problem?**

Because the assembly is the most commonly replaced part in this failure and the least commonly at fault. If the compartment is above 5 degrees F, or the fill valve is metering short, or the fill tube is capped with ice, a brand-new assembly produces exactly the same result. Measure the temperature, watch a fill, and find the restriction before anyone orders a part.

**Should I pour hot water on a frozen ice maker to free it up?**

No. Hot water refreezes somewhere less convenient, and it can find its way into the ice maker's electrical connections. If the assembly is iced into a block, the correct fix is a controlled defrost: empty the compartment, switch the unit off, and let it come to room temperature with the door open until everything is dry, then restart it and give it 24 hours.

**How long should a Sub-Zero take to fill an empty bin?**

Full-size built-in ice makers are modest producers by design, so an empty bin can take a couple of days to fill. A UC-15I undercounter ice maker is a different machine entirely, rated up to 50 lbs of ice per day with 25 lbs of storage. Judging a built-in ice maker against a dedicated ice machine is the most common false alarm we get called about.
